FAQs on Being A Nasty Woman

+ What is a Nasty Woman?

While originally intended to describe Hillary Clinton as an insult, the phrase ‘Nasty Woman’ now seeks to embody any strong woman fighting for equality and representation. It is a feminist hashtag and slogan that is a rallying cry for women everywhere.

We also love Dr. Caroline Heldman definition: “A ‘nasty woman’ is a woman who refuses to be silent in the face of injustice. She speaks out against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and the mistreatment of people with disabilities. She demands an equal seat in the halls of political and corporate power, and she will not be dismissed, shushed, or ‘mansplained.’ She knows the value of her voice and actions, and she demands justice in a profoundly unjust world. The ‘nasty woman’ is loud and proud.”

+ Do I have to be a feminist to be a Nasty Woman?

YUP. Basically.

Because if you believe in equality for women, you’re nasty. If you support women, you’re nasty. Being feminist isn’t a bad thing. It isn’t competitive or prescriptive. Anyone can be a feminist. And to be feminist is hyper-simple. Support, believe, uplift women.

+ Is NASTY WOMAN WINES run by women?

Sure is!

As owner and founder, Meg Murray is thrilled to be at the helm of a wine company that supports and celebrates women. Women winemakers and winery owners are extremely rare and she’s proud to represent and hopefully lift up other women to join her in this field.

Representation matters!

+ How did the company come to be?

NASTY WOMAN WINES was originally founded on Election Day 2016 by Meg Murray as a celebratory brand for the first female president. When this glass ceiling didn’t break, Meg pivoted to use her expertise in the wine industry as a way to fight back against antiquated patriarchal systems of oppression.

That’s right – wine as a means to make change happen!

+ Can I be nice and Nasty?

Sure can!

Sweet and sour, salt and pepper, nasty and nice. We do it all here at NASTY WOMAN WINES. You do you.

There are no big rules or ‘To Do’ lists for being Nasty. There’s just the overarching mantra of supporting women.

Our strength comes from the Nasty Woman inside each of us. At our core, we are strong and capable, inspiring the people around us. We rise up, resilient, and ready to lift each other up.

+ Can a man be a Nasty Woman?

You can be man, woman, or outside the confines of the binary.

We know that a Nasty Woman isn’t defined by gender or sex, but by one’s commitment to intersectional feminism and the respect of all humans, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, or disability.

We see our differences as a source of strength to nurture and know that representation matters.

+ How do you choose your Label Ladies?

We utilize our privilege and platform to amplify the voices that need to be heard. Our label ladies often are selected organically, as women that inspire, that embody the essence of being a Nasty Woman. We’re always seeking women that represent a wide array of cultures, experiences, and perspectives so if you know a Nasty Woman you’d like to nominate, email us!

+ How do you support women?

NASTY WOMAN WINES doesn’t just champion women on our wine labels; we put 20% of our net profits towards getting more women to the table in policy and leadership. Together, we raise wine glasses, and together, we lift women up.

+ How can I support women?

One of the most powerful actions we can take as a consumer is to be conscious of where our money is spent.

As consumers, we have the power to propel women to get seats at tables where decisions are being made. We can do this by supporting and aligning ourselves with businesses that work hard every day to amplify our own voices to get us closer to actually getting those seats.

When you support businesses that believe, lead, and fight for equality for everyone - regardless of race, class, gender, creed, and sexual orientation - you are a Nasty Woman.
