23: WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT MICHAEL JORDAN.

This number is clear when you look at boardroom photos. The amount is obvious when you peruse the list of the world’s richest people. You can see this number in the cost of childcare. You can determine this amount from the lack of mandatory maternity leave. 23 is present in historically male-dominated college majors leading to higher-paid industries.

We’re talking about the wage gap. And this is a global, ever-present inequity that rears its head in nearly every woman’s journey every time she gets paid. This ubiquitous and highly documented inequity has profound impacts. While universally affecting all women, it specifically targets women of color. It’s salt in the wound - the more marginalized you are, the less money you make compared to a white man.

Tom, Dick, and Harry will make $100 while I, a white college-educated woman, will make about $81, despite me banging out stellar work. But this cruel truth plays out to $0.65 on the dollar if you’re a Black woman and $0.55 if you’re Latinx. This significant gap has been common knowledge for decades with the 1963 Equity Pay Act addressing the wage differences. At that time, women earned $0.59 on the dollar. 57 years and we’re stagnating. Progress is too damn slow. Gender inequality is directly linked to income inequality and we here at Nasty Woman Wines are over it!

What can you do? This article lists a few changes you can make in your life, as well as some policy initiatives you can advocate for, while these books provide history, data, and inspiration.
